What should a husband do who swore an oath upon his wife that she not go to college on a specific day to prevent her from mixing with men, knowing that it is a practical college and she must attend due to coursework requirements, but she did not uphold his oath? Is she considered sinful for that, and what should he do with her, knowing that she is compelled to go?
If the wife's mixed-gender study involves impermissible interaction, then the husband is not permitted to allow her to participate in it, and she must obey him in this regard. She would be sinful if she disobeys him. Ibn Majah narrated from Abu Umamah that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The believer does not benefit after the fear of Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, from anything better than a righteous wife who, if he commands her, she obeys him; if he looks at her, she pleases him; if he swears an oath concerning her, she fulfills it; and if he is absent from her, she protects herself and his property." The husband must prevent his wife from impermissible mixing, and studying in mixed-gender universities is not permissible except out of necessity or dire need.
