Is it permissible for a Muslim traveler to marry for protection from tribulations (fitan), and would that be considered a temporary marriage?

Marrying with the intention of chastity (obtaining 'iffah) is rewarded and not sinful. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "O young men, whoever among you can afford to marry, let him do so, for it helps him lower his gaze and guard his chastity." And he said: "There are three whose help is a duty upon Allah: the warrior in the cause of Allah, the indentured slave who desires to pay off his freedom, and the one who marries seeking chastity."

As for a man who marries more than one woman, he must be just between his wives and should not be absent from the first wife for more than six months unless with her permission.

As for marriage with the intention of divorce upon the termination of a need, it is permissible according to the majority of jurists, provided that the timing is not agreed upon at the time of the contract.
