Are witnesses required for a divorce to take place, meaning is this essential for its occurrence?

The majority of the early and later generations of scholars (Salaf and Khalaf) hold that witnessing is not a condition for the validity of divorce, because it is the man's right, and whenever he pronounces it, it becomes effective, even if he does not have witnesses for it. However, it is recommended to have witnesses for it, based on the Almighty's saying: "And call to witness two just men from among you."
