What is the ruling regarding my divorcing my wife without witnesses?

Witnessing is neither a condition nor a requirement for divorce. If the husband pronounces it, it takes effect, even if he is absent from his wife or alone. Similarly, it takes effect by writing it with the intention of divorce. The consensus of scholars has been reported that witnessing is not obligatory for divorce.
