Is it permissible to seek divorce from a husband with whom there is no mutual love, knowing that the marriage took place out of compassion, and that the husband is characterized by piety and good character, by analogy with the story of the righteous woman who sought divorce from her husband during the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?

If the husband is a man of faith and good character, then patience and staying with him are better. A man of faith honors [his wife] and does not wrong [her], and marital homes are not built on love alone. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "No believing man should hate a believing woman; if he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another." If you cannot be patient, it is permissible to request khul' (divorce at the wife's instance) in exchange for compensation. However, thinking about another person while you are still married destroys the marital life.
