Is it permissible for a girl to talk with her suitor to learn about his character and personality before marriage, especially if her father refuses her marriage and wishes for her to remain to serve him? And is it permissible for her to accept her father's demand to cohabit with him in exchange for marriage?

Speaking with the suitor is permissible without seclusion and when there is a need, provided that the proper manners are observed. If the father prevents his competent daughter from marrying, she may refer the matter to the judiciary. A father who prevents his daughter from marrying out of jealousy or because he does not want others to raise her has violated both reason and tradition. The father's action of seeking intimacy with his daughter as he does with his wives is a grave indecency, and he must fear Allah and repent before it is too late. The daughter must flee to Allah, be persistent in supplication, not despair, and be extremely cautious not to allow her father to have his way with her, even if he ties it to his consent to her marriage. If the father insists, she may threaten him with referring the matter to the authorities, and if he does not desist, she should refer her case to them.
