What is the ruling on my fasting and prayers during Ramadan, and what should I do about the bloody spots and discharges that started with me from the beginning of the month, knowing that my usual menstrual period is six days and that I use an IUD?
The minimum duration of menstruation, according to the majority of scholars, is one day and one night. Any spotting or small amounts of blood seen by a woman are not considered menstruation unless they reach one day and one night or more. However, according to the Malikis and Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, there is no minimum limit for menstruation.
If the duration of bleeding, including periods of purity, exceeds fifteen days, then it is considered istihada (non-menstrual bleeding). In this case, she should fast and pray after her previous regular period ends, and she should perform ghusl (ritual bath) for each prayer. If it does not exceed fifteen days, then all of it is considered menstruation, and her regular period is considered to have changed.
The fast is valid if the bleeding stops at night, she intends to fast, and she does not see any blood during the day. She must perform ghusl when the bleeding stops. Discharges (yellowish or brownish) after purity indicate purity, while during the days of menstruation, they are considered menstruation.
