What is the ruling on one who swore on the Qur’an to omit part of his name in order to obtain a passport with a name different from his original name?

If the questioner swore that this was his full name, when it was not, he has broken his oath and must repent. This is because it is a "Ghamus oath" (a false oath sworn deliberately to usurp a right or to deceive), for which there is no expiation according to the majority of scholars. The sin is even greater if he swore by the Qur’an. However, if he was asked to swear by his name generally, it appears that he would not have broken his oath if this was part of his name. But, if a right of another person depended on the oath, and he swore while omitting part of his name to evade this right, he has broken his oath. In oaths, the intention of the one requesting the oath is considered if there is a right of another person involved.
