What is the ruling on delivering a sermon from the minbar on Eid? And is it an innovation (bid'ah)?
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not deliver the Eid sermon from a minbar; rather, he would deliver it standing on the ground. The proof for this is the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to go out to the musalla (prayer ground), perform the prayer, then stand facing the people and admonish them. Abu Sa'id rebuked Marwan ibn al-Hakam for bringing a minbar and delivering the sermon before the prayer. Some scholars are of the view that taking the minbar out for the two Eids is permissible, especially if there is a need for it, while others believe that delivering the sermon without a minbar is preferable. The matter in this regard is broad.
