What is the ruling on speaking, exchanging greetings, and offering Eid felicitations during the Eid sermon? Does this nullify the reward or is it considered idle talk?

Attendance at the Eid sermons is not obligatory. For those who attend, listening attentively is required. However, some scholars do not consider listening obligatory nor do they prohibit speaking during them, because listening to them is merely recommended. Malik, on the other hand, holds that listening attentively to them is obligatory, just like the Friday sermon. Others view them as being for teaching purposes, similar to the Hajj sermons, and thus listening attentively to them is not obligatory, citing the hadith of Abdullah ibn al-Sa'ib as their evidence. Consequently, speaking, greeting, or offering congratulations during the Eid sermon incurs no sin according to many scholars, though refraining from such actions is preferable to avoid disagreement.
