Are animals pure or impure?

The default rule for living animals is that they are pure, with the exception of dogs and pigs.

Scholars have differed regarding the purity of dogs and pigs. The Shafi'is and Hanbalis are of the opinion that dogs are impure, while the Hanafis and Malikis consider them pure.

As for pigs, the Shafi'is, Hanafis, and Hanbalis consider them impure, while the Malikis consider them pure.
