Is cancer an expiation for sins? And is a patient rewarded for psychological illnesses such as epilepsy and trichotillomania? Is it permissible to supplicate for a deceased mother despite feeling remiss and unworthy? And is it permissible to supplicate for oneself to achieve martyrdom?

Rectify your sins with sincere repentance and by increasing good deeds that erase them. Do not refrain from doing good or from supplicating for your mother, for you will be rewarded for it, and she will benefit from it. Be patient with your illness, and know that it is an expiation for your sins and a purification for your transgressions. Thank Allah for your righteousness, and strive to perfect yourself through obedience to Him, the Almighty. Do not wish for death; however, it is permissible to wish for martyrdom.
