Is masturbation considered a major sin, and does Allah detest the one who persists in it, and is the practitioner of this habit, despite his advising others and his repeated repentance, considered among the hypocrites? What is the way to get rid of it, and what are the ways of asceticism in this world in a manner that does not lead to extremism?

Immediate repentance from masturbation and looking at forbidden things is obligatory, because persistence in sin may lead to disbelief. Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned benefits regarding this topic in his book "Al-Daa' wa al-Dawaa'" (The Disease and the Cure). There is no specific dhikr or supplication for abandoning forbidden acts, but general remembrance of Allah with presence of heart is among the most beneficial remedies, in addition to insistent supplication and reflecting on the Quran. It is also recommended to associate with the righteous and cooperate with them in seeking knowledge, and to fill one's free time with good deeds. When desire surges, one should leave the house, or recite the Quran, or perform ghusl (definition) (ritual bath), or wudu (ablution), and fast frequently to curb desire, and strive for marriage. To reduce attachment to worldly life, one should learn about its realities, visit graves, and read the biographies of ascetics and righteous people. Among the beneficial books are: "Al-Zuhd" (Asceticism) by Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, "Al-Zuhd wa al-Raqa'iq" (Asceticism and Softeners of the Heart) by Ibn al-Mubarak, and "Mukhtasar Minhaj al-Qasidin" (Abridged Path of the Seekers).
