What should a person do who stole things from his friends and their guests and then discarded them, and is now repentant and regretful? Is it sufficient for him to simply repent, or must he return the grievances to their owners?

Theft is one of the major sins, and its punishment is the cutting off of the hand. However, for one whom Allah has concealed, they must perform sincere repentance and increase in righteous deeds.

If the theft occurred before puberty, there is no sin upon them, but they must guarantee what they stole, whether it was before or after puberty, by returning the right to its owner.

The thief must return the stolen item if it is still present. If it has been damaged or destroyed, they must guarantee its value. It is not obligatory to inform the owners of the items about the theft. Rather, the thief should conceal their act and return the right to them through indirect means. If the owner of the right is unknown, the thief should give the value of the stolen item as charity on their behalf. As for one whose owner is known, it is obligatory to deliver it to them as far as possible.
