What is the meaning of "al-ba'ah" in the Hadith of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?

Scholars have differed concerning the meaning of al-ba'ah in the Prophetic Hadith: is it intercourse or the expenses of marriage? Al-Nawawi held that the meaning is one, for al-ba'ah refers to intercourse because of a person's ability to afford the expenses of marriage, or that al-ba'ah means the expenses of marriage. Ibn Hajar was of the view that al-ba'ah includes the ability to have intercourse and the expenses of marriage, which is the correct opinion, as it is permissible to use a polysemous word for both of its meanings.
