What is the ruling on one who breaks their fast in Ramadan?
The types of fast-breaking acts in vary. For one who breaks their fast by eating, drinking, masturbating, or by thought or gaze, they must make up the day along with repentance and seeking forgiveness. As for one who breaks their fast due to an excuse, such as being sick, traveling, menstruating, or in postpartum bleeding, they only need to make up the day. A pregnant or breastfeeding woman, if they fear for themselves, may break their fast and make up the days. If they fear for their child, they may break their fast and make up the days, along with expiation, which is feeding one needy person for each day. And for one who breaks their fast by sexual intercourse, they must perform the major expiation: freeing a believing slave. If they cannot find one, then fasting two consecutive months. If they are unable to do so, then feeding sixty needy persons. The evidence for this is the of Abu Hurayrah in the two collections.
