In the early days of the Islamic conquests, the Berbers were ruled by Gregorius the Patrician (Jurjir al-Afranji), then by Kusayla, then by Dihya al-Kahina. After that, they fully embraced Islam. Tariq ibn Ziyad was a Berber from a tribe called Srif or Nafza (present-day Amazigh). There is no truth to the claim that he resorted to begging in his old age; rather, he was honored during the reign of al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik.
