Is it permissible to act upon Ibn Taymiyyah's opinion that multiple divorces pronounced in a single sitting count as one divorce, and to take back one's wife without her knowledge or witnesses, in order to avoid problems with the wife and her family?

The fatwa issued by us concerning the three-fold divorce is the view of the majority, which states that it counts as three divorces. An ordinary person should refer to trustworthy scholars and act upon their fatwas. There is no blame upon him for following whichever mujtahid he wishes, provided that he does not merely seek out concessions. Issues of divorce are complex, and an ordinary person should not rely on his own understanding. Rather, he should present his case to the scholars. It is not permissible for anyone to issue a fatwa without knowledge.
