Why does the Qur'an generally address men rather than women?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The Quran's addressing in the masculine form does not imply neglect of females. Often, the masculine form is used out of predominance, being lighter and more convenient for the tongue, and is fundamental in the language, as Sibawayh and others stated.

In meaning, the discourse also addresses females unless evidence specifies otherwise, for "women are the sisters of men."

The Quran's style varied; it often mentioned men and women together, and sometimes singled out women with specific rulings.
