Does my staying on the phone after my mother asked me to turn it off and go to sleep, on the grounds of wasting time, constitute disobedience to parents?
Obeying parents is obligatory, and disobeying their command is a forbidden act of disobedience ( uquq). The default is immediate compliance unless there is evidence to the contrary. However, this obligation is limited by five conditions: the ability to comply, the absence of contextual indicators that divert the command from being obligatory, contextual indicators suggesting their command is for immediate action, that what is commanded is not a sin, and that compliance does not result in harm to the child or the loss of a necessity. So, if a mother orders her daughter to turn off her phone and go to sleep immediately, and the daughter persists in conversation without necessity, this is a forbidden act of disobedience that necessitates repentance and seeking forgiveness.
