Housing is a necessity, like food and drink. However, owning it is a need that does not permit borrowing with usury as long as renting is possible. Usury is one of the greatest prohibitions, and it is not permissible to borrow with it to own a house except in cases of dire necessity. The limit of necessity is when it is highly probable that one will perish due to it, or be afflicted with unbearable hardship, or be unable to achieve the minimum standard of living for the poor. Necessity is assessed according to its extent.
