Is lying attributed to one who said something that turned out to be untrue, while he believed it to be true? And is one who thought a person had arrived and said, "He has come," considered a liar? This is knowing that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, considered one of the Companions a liar when he thought that a woman must observe the longer waiting period ('iddah).

Lying is to report something contrary to its reality, whether intentionally or unintentionally. However, the sin is associated with intent and deliberation. So, if someone believes something to be true and speaks about it, and then it turns out to be otherwise, they are not sinful. Ibn Uthaymeen clarified that lying is news that contradicts reality, even if the speaker did not intend to lie, citing the story of Subai'ah al-Aslamiyah and the Prophet's (peace be upon him) statement, "Abu al-Sanabil lied," even though he did not intend to lie.
