What is the increase from Allah in states of ease and hardship, as an interpretation of His saying, may He be exalted: "If you are grateful, I will surely increase you"?

Ibn Kathir said in his interpretation of the verse: "If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]" (14:7) meaning: if you are grateful for My blessings upon you, I will surely increase you from them; and "but if you deny," meaning: if you deny the blessings and reject them, "indeed, My punishment is severe." This is by removing them from them and punishing them.

Al-Shawkani said: Whoever thanks Allah for His provision, Allah will expand it for him; and whoever thanks Him for obedience, He will increase him in it; and whoever thanks Him for health, He will increase him in health.

Among the ways to show gratitude for blessings is for the servant to know his Lord in hardship and ease, and to praise Him for ease and for the lightness of trials, and to remain steadfast in His obedience. Allah Almighty says: "And We test you with evil and with good as a trial; and to Us you will be returned" (21:35).

The believer must be patient in calamities and thank Allah that He did not try him with something greater. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Wondrous is the affair of the believer, for there is good in every matter of his, and this is not the case for anyone but the believer: if he is afflicted with ease, he is grateful, and that is good for him; and if he is afflicted with hardship, he is patient, and that is good for him." And Allah's increase for the afflicted is by increasing well-being and alleviating calamities.
