What is the ruling on one who broke his fast in Ramadan by committing fornication multiple times? Does he fast 60 days for each day or for the entire month? Or does he expiate by feeding the poor? What is the opinion of the four schools of thought on this? Is there no blame on him if he adopts the easiest opinion? What is the legitimate excuse that permits him to switch to expiation by feeding the poor? What does a woman do with her fasting during menstruation? And does Hajj expiate all these sins?

The views of scholars concerning one who engages in intercourse during the days of Ramadan (definition): The Hanafis and one view among the Hanbalis hold that a single expiation suffices, whereas the majority of scholars believe that an expiation is due for each day.

Transitioning to feeding the poor: This is not permissible unless one is unable to emancipate a slave or fast. According to the majority of scholars, the expiation for intercourse during a Ramadan day is obligatory in the following order: emancipating a slave, then fasting, then feeding the poor. The Malikis, however, view it as optional, but the preponderant opinion is that of the majority.

What is obligatory for the layman: To seek a fatwa (definition) from a trustworthy scholar.

The woman: There is disagreement regarding the necessity of expiation for her if she engages in intercourse during a Ramadan day.

Menstruation does not interrupt the expiation fast: The woman breaks her fast and then makes up the number of days she missed.

Hajj: Sin is expiated by sincere repentance. There is disagreement regarding its expiation of major sins without repentance.

Upon the perpetrator of sin: Remorse and sincere repentance, for the door of repentance is open.
