Is a human being, regarding the issue of procreation, granted free choice or predetermined?
The belief of the Sunnis is that everything in the universe occurs by the decree of Allah the Almighty. Allah, glory be to Him, decreed everything fifty thousand years before creating the heavens and the earth, so nothing happens except what He has decreed. Nevertheless, servants are commanded to take lawful means, for they have will, desire, and ability through which their actions occur. They are commanded to marry in order to seek offspring, for Allah has decreed things by means of causes, and both causes and effects are part of Allah’s decree. Allah the Almighty says: (So now have sexual relations with them and seek what Allah has ordained for you) [Al-Baqarah:187]. The intention here is to seek offspring. Thus, in matters of procreation and otherwise, a person is facilitated for what he was created, taking the means that Allah has made a way, and nothing of that departs from what Allah has decreed.
