Does the wife deserve the deferred dowry in circumstances other than divorce, such as the husband's death?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The deferred Mahr (dowry) has two scenarios:

1. If a specific due date is stipulated: It must be paid upon the arrival of the agreed-upon date, unless the wife consents to its postponement. 2. If no specific due date is stipulated: The Hanbalis are of the view that its due time is separation (whether by death, divorce, or annulment). So, if a man divorces his wife, he must pay her the deferred Mahr. If the wife passes away before receiving it, it is taken from her estate before its division.

The deferred Mahr is never forfeited unless the wife waives it and relinquishes her right to it.
