Is it obligatory for a Muslim to go out on a military expedition every year?

We do not know of any scholar who obligated individual Muslims to go out for battle once a year. Rather, they mentioned this concerning the Imam and his dispatching of jihad armies. This is the minimum expected of him, so that the year's efforts do not go to waste, so that the enemy does not grow strong, and so that the people of jihad do not become accustomed to ease. The communal obligation of jihad is fulfilled in one of two ways: either the Imam mans the frontiers with men, or he invades the land of disbelief himself or with his armies once every year, unless there is a need to delay it due to the weakness of the Muslims, or for a benefit such as hoping for the enemy's conversion to Islam. The absolute command of raiding, without specifying it to be annual, is sufficient in the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Whoever dies without having fought in the way of Allah, nor having intended to do so, dies on a branch of hypocrisy."
