Did the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to wear his ring on his index finger?

Scholars have differed on the placement of wearing a ring, holding two opinions:

1. Preferring the left hand: This is the madhhab of the Hanafis, Malikis, and Hanbalis. They cited as evidence the hadith of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): "The Prophet's (peace be upon him) ring was on this," and he pointed to the little finger of his left hand. They also cited the practice of most Companions, the ease of using it for sealing, and to differ from the Rafidah.

2. Preferring the right hand: This is the madhhab of the Shafi'is. They cited as evidence hadiths including: "The Prophet (peace be upon him) wore a silver ring on his right hand," and that the hadiths mentioning the right hand are sounder and more numerous, and because he (peace be upon him) admired using the right in all his affairs. They responded to the first opinion's evidence by stating that wearing a ring on the right hand is not a characteristic emblem of the Rafidah in most countries, and that sunnahs should not be abandoned merely because an innovative group practices them, as it was also reported that other Companions wore rings on their right hand.

Some scholars have held that both options (right and left) are permissible, acting upon all the hadiths.

As for the specific finger, it is recommended to wear it on the "pinky finger," and there is a prohibition against wearing it on the middle finger and the index finger.
