What is the difference between the People of the Book and the polytheists mentioned in the Qur’an, and why is it permissible for a Muslim man to marry a woman from the People of the Book but not a polytheist woman? The People of the Book are the Jews and Christians. Marrying their women was initially forbidden in Islam, as part of the general prohibition against marrying disbelieving women. Then, Allah permitted the marriage of chaste women from among them, as stated in His Almighty words: "And the chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you." Women from the People of the Book are distinguished from other disbelieving women by the possibility of their convergence with Muslims on many matters of religion, which could be a means for them to embrace Islam and for their relatives to convert to Islam. Furthermore, a Muslim respects their religion and their prophet.
