Is it permissible to consider money paid to feed 30 people as expiation for a wife not fasting, if it was used to buy pepper soup instead of real food due to the availability of sufficient foodstuffs, and is this soup considered food?
If a wife is unable to fast due to an illness from which recovery is hoped, she must make up the missed fasts (qada'), and she is not required to feed the poor (fidya). However, for one who is unable to fast due to old age or an illness from which recovery is not hoped, he or she must feed a needy person for each day, based on the verse: "And upon those who are able to fast, but with difficulty, a ransom of feeding a needy person." Anas ibn Malik fed the poor after he grew old. The required amount for feeding is debated, but the majority of scholars hold that it is a mudd of food (a quarter of a sa') The Hanbalis, however, view it as a mudd of wheat or half a sa' of other foods (approximately 1.5 kilograms). It suffices to give each needy person 750 grams of rice, and it is permissible to give it to one needy person or several. It is not permissible to feed anyone other than the needy, unless they themselves are in need.
