What is the ruling on someone who swore to conclude the marriage contract on the same day if the girl agreed, then broke his oath—does he fast as expiation for breaking the oath?

If the girl's father swore to marry off his daughter on the day she agreed to the marriage, and he did not do so, then he must offer expiation for breaking an oath: feeding ten poor persons, or clothing them, or freeing a slave. If he is unable to do any of these, he must fast for three days. Fasting is only permissible after being unable to feed, clothe, or free a slave.

If the girl agrees to marry a suitable man, and her father refuses to marry her off without a valid religious excuse, he is considered to be preventing her marriage (عاضلاً لها). In such a case, she has the right to refer her matter to a Sharia judge to have him marry her.
