What are the reasons, justifications and conditions for applying the death penalty (execution) in Islam?

The death penalty (execution) is established for an individual in the following cases: the apostate, the married fornicator (adulterer), the intentional killer (as retaliation/qisas), the highway robber (muharib), and the spy. In addition to these, there are the one who abandons prayer, the sorcerer, and the zindiq (heretic/crypto-disbeliever). The detailed conditions for executing these punishments are found in books of Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence).
