Which carries a greater sin and punishment in the sight of Allah: a woman who imitates men in her dress, or an adulterer?

It is impermissible to judge one sin as greater than another except with a legal (Shar'i) proof. The belief that plucking eyebrows (al-Namas) and women imitating men are worse than adultery (zina) is incorrect. Adultery is one of the gravest major sins after polytheism (shirk) and murder. Allah has called it an abomination (fahishah) and threatened its perpetrator with a doubling of torment on the Day of Resurrection.

Scholars have deduced that adultery is the greatest sin after polytheism and murder, based on the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud, in which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, mentioned that the greatest sins in the sight of Allah, after polytheism and killing one's child, are committing adultery with one's neighbor's wife.

The curse mentioned regarding plucking eyebrows and other acts differs from the curse on a disbeliever; it is a punishment befitting monotheists. Adultery is more severe than drinking alcohol, despite the established curse on alcohol from ten different angles. It has been authentically reported that adultery is greater and more severe in the sight of Allah than drinking alcohol.
