What are the attributes of God, the ignorance of which renders a person an infidel (kafir), and are they the seven attributes as the Ash'aris state?
An ignorant person regarding attributes does not commit disbelief as long as he believes in Allah, His Messengers, His Books, and the Last Day. This is what Abul- Al-Ash'ari ultimately returned to. Scholars differed concerning declaring an ignorant person regarding attributes a disbeliever. Some declared him a disbeliever, while others said he does not disbelieve due to ignorance of attributes, and upon this, Abul-Hasan Al-Ash'ari's final opinion settled. The proof that an ignorant person regarding attributes does not commit disbelief if he believes in Allah, His Messengers, His Books, and the Last Day, is that the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, asked him about destiny, and they were believers before asking him and at the time of their questioning.
As for one who denies an attribute, whether out of ignorance or misinterpretation, he does not commit disbelief until the legal proof is established against him, the abandonment of which leads to disbelief, and any doubts or invalid interpretations he holds are removed. For Allah Almighty does not punish until He sends a messenger. It has become clear that a statement can be disbelief, but declaring its utterer a disbeliever is not ruled upon until he has received sufficient knowledge to establish the proof against him. The methodology of the righteous predecessors concerning the attributes of Allah is to affirm what Allah affirmed for Himself or what His Messenger affirmed for Him, without distortion, negation, asking how, or likening. As for the methodology of the Ash'aris who affirm the seven attributes and allegorize the rest, it is a false methodology.
