Can one adopt Al-Shafi‘i’s saying, "And if he said to her, ‘Go and get married,’ or ‘Marry whomever you wish,’ it would not be a divorce unless he said, ‘I intended divorce by it,’" for someone who said such words to his wife and is not certain of his intention, even though he is certain that he did not intend it, but obsessive whispers prevent him from remembering, all in order to ward off these obsessive whispers?

Whoever utters words of divorce without intention, or if there is doubt about his intention, then his divorce does not take effect. He should not pay attention to doubts concerning the matter of divorce. Rather, he should seek Allah's help and occupy his time with what benefits him.
