How do we reconcile God's promises to His saints of a good life and the removal of fear and sorrow from them, with the severe torment suffered by the noble Companions? And does spiritual elevation necessitate hardship and persecution?

A good life and true happiness are measured by the goodness of the soul and the tranquility of the heart, not by the comfort of the body. The true believer is the happiest of people, even if subjected to trials and calamities, because happiness lies in the love of Allah, knowledge of Him, and remembrance of Him. Trials are a test to distinguish the truthful from the liar, an expiation for sins, and a raising of ranks. There is no contradiction between trials and a good life for the believer, for Allah defends those who believe. Patience in affliction, coupled with good expectation of Allah and reliance upon Him, brings happiness and tranquility.
