Is it permissible to eat squirrel meat as a cure for asthma and shortness of breath?

Scholars differed concerning the ruling on eating squirrel, and the preponderant opinion is that it is permissible to eat it, because the basic principle regarding animals is permissibility, and it is not among the predatory animals with fangs. Ibn al-Mundhir mentioned that the squirrel is not a beast of prey and grazes on plants. Al-Nawawi held the view that it is permissible to eat it, while Ibn Qudamah inclined towards its permissibility due to the prevalence of permissibility over prohibition. It is permissible to eat it out of necessity, such as for medicinal purposes, but merely for craving, it is safer to abstain from it due to the difference of opinion concerning it.
