Is it permissible to eat porcupine meat?

Scholars differed concerning the ruling on eating porcupine. Some prohibited it because it is considered repulsive (mustakhbath), while others permitted it because no text has been revealed to prohibit it. The more preponderant opinion is that it is permissible (halal) because the fundamental principle regarding animals is permissibility, and no evidence has been reported for its prohibition. It feeds on plants and is not among the predatory animals with fangs. The Hadith that reported its prohibition is weak. Furthermore, the mere repulsiveness of something does not necessitate its prohibition, for the Sacred Law only prohibits that which is genuinely impure/evil (khabith).
