The answer

We have been commanded not to follow our gaze with a falling star, and to say upon seeing it: "Masha'Allah, la quwwata illa billah (What Allah wills [has come to pass]; there is no power except with Allah)."

It is narrated that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), when he saw a star falling, would say: "Allahumma sawwibhu wa asib bihi wa qina sharra ma yattaba' (O Allah, direct it [to its target], and strike with it, and protect us from the evil of what follows it)."
