Is it permissible to learn to play the 'ud?

It is impermissible to learn the 'oud or other musical instruments, to play them, or to listen to them, due to what was narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in the hadith of Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari: "There will be people from my Ummah who will consider unlawful sexual intercourse, silk, intoxicants, and musical instruments as lawful." And his saying: "People from my Ummah will drink intoxicants, calling them by other names. Musical instruments will be played over their heads along with singing girls. Allah will cause the earth to swallow them, and He will transform some of them into apes and pigs."
