Is a wife forbidden to her husband if, in a fit of extreme anger, he says to her: "By Allah, you are forbidden to me if I go to your family's house," given his desire to go to his wife's family's house? And is expiation incumbent upon him?

This statement is considered Zihar (a pre-Islamic Arabian form of divorce by which a man could divorce his wife by saying, "You are to me as my mother's back"). However, you do not become a Muzahir (one who has committed Zihar) unless you go to your wife's family's house. If you go, you become a Muzahir, but if you do not go, then there is nothing upon you.
