What is the ruling on my taking the initiative to send an anonymous message to a girl I once loved, believing that revealing my identity to her would put an end to what might have caused her distress? And would I be acting too hastily again if I were to end my engagement based on my feelings for that girl?
A young man corresponding with a foreign girl with words of love is not permissible, due to the corrupting influences it causes and the girl thinking of more than one young man. If your paternal cousin is religious and of good character, and marrying her pleases your parents, then it is a good matter, for homes are not built on love alone. If you do not wish to marry her, there is no sin upon you in breaking off the engagement. If you desire to marry the girl you love, try to convince your parents, for the best guidance for two who love each other is marriage, otherwise, turn your heart away from her, for the ailment of passionate love can be treated.
