What is the proper method for shaving a newborn's hair, and is it permissible to give charity equivalent to its weight without actually shaving it?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded the shaving of a newborn's hair on the seventh day and giving its weight in silver as charity. His saying: "Remove the harm from him" refers to the hair. Most often, shaving is done with a razor. The command to give charity equivalent to the hair's weight necessitates shaving it first. Nevertheless, there is no harm in giving charity equivalent to what a newborn's hair typically weighs (like a dirham or part of it) if the hair has not been shaved, as both are a Sunnah.
