Confining Hadith scholars throughout the ages is an impossible task to encompass, but we can point to the most prominent ones, starting with the noble Companions, such as the Rightly Guided Caliphs and Abu Hurayrah. Then came the Tabi‘in (Successors), like Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyib and Al-Hasan al-Basri. Following them were the Tabi‘ at-Tabi‘in (Successors of the Successors), like Malik ibn Anas and Shu‘bah ibn al-Hajjaj, who excelled in isnad (chains of narration) and the conditions of narrators.

Then came the Imams of Hadith and the scholars of al-Jarh wa at-Ta‘dil (discrediting and attesting), such as Yahya ibn Sa‘id and Ahmad ibn Hanbal. They were followed by the authors of the Sahih collections and Sunan, such as Al-Bukhari and Muslim, Ibn Khuzaymah and Ibn Hibban, then Al-Daraqutni and Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, Al-Hakim an-Naysaburi and Abu Nu‘aym al-Isfahani, and Al-Bayhaqi and Ibn Hazm.

Hadith scholars continued to appear throughout the centuries with prominent names in every generation, reaching the later eras such as Al-Mubarakpuri, Ahmad Shakir, Al-Albani, Ibn Baz, and Muqbil ibn Hadi al-Wadi‘i.
