What is the ruling on one who prays so it may be said (that he is among those who pray)?
Acts of worship are not accepted unless performed with sincerity towards Allah Almighty, which is a pillar for the acceptance of good deeds. Allah Almighty says: "And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion." Ostentation (riya') invalidates deeds, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, narrating from his Lord: "I am the One Who is most in no need of partners. Whoever performs a deed in which he associates another with Me, I will abandon him and his (association)." Pure ostentation is when one intends to show off to creation for a worldly purpose. Such a deed is null and void, and its doer deserves Allah's wrath.
