How can one reconcile His saying, the Most High: "And I do not know what will be done with me or with you," and His saying, the Most High: "That Allah may forgive you your sin that which has gone before and that which will come after"?

The reconciliation between the verse: (That Allah may forgive you your faults of the past and those to follow) and the verse: (And I do not know what will be done with me or with you) has two interpretations:

1. The First Interpretation: That the verse (That Allah may forgive you) abrogates the verse (And I do not know what will be done with me or with you). The latter verse was revealed, and the polytheists rejoiced at it. Then the verse of forgiveness was revealed, abrogating it, and clarified the Prophet's destiny (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

2. The Second Interpretation: That there is no abrogation, and that the statement: (And I do not know what will be done with me or with you) pertains only to worldly matters, such as death, illness, wealth, and poverty, and not to matters of the Hereafter. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) knew the destiny of believers and disbelievers in the Hereafter. This latter interpretation is closer to the truth.
