The fundamental principle for a righteous wife is obedience to her Lord and her husband. The husband may prevent his wife from visiting her family for a legitimate religious reason, but he incurs sin if he severs her ties with her family without justification, and she must obey him in not going out. The husband has the right to move his household to wherever he deems beneficial, and the wife must obey him unless a condition was stipulated in the marriage contract that she would not move. The husband must treat his wife kindly, and if he sees her committing a religious transgression, he should admonish her, then abandon her in bed, then strike her with a non-injurious blow. Ill-treatment by the husband does not justify the wife disobeying his command. The wife is advised to strive to please her husband, to communicate with him in a spirit of obedience, to frequently supplicate for him, and to seek the intervention of someone he trusts if moving would cause harm to her religious practice or exacerbate the relationship's deterioration.
