Is it obligatory for the wife to make up the days of postpartum bleeding (nifas) and breastfeeding that she missed in two consecutive Ramadans, knowing that a poor person was fed for each day?
There is no blame on the wife for delaying the fasts she missed in due to the excuse of breastfeeding until after the next Ramadan, so that she can wean her infant if fasting harms her or harms her child. It is permissible for a breastfeeding woman to break her fast by scholarly consensus if she fears for herself or her child. If the fear is only for herself, or for both herself and her child, then she is only required to make up the fasts (qada'), without feeding the poor (it'am). However, if the fear is only for her child, the majority of scholars hold that she must both make up the fasts and feed the poor, while some say only making up the fasts is required. There is no sin upon her and no expiation (kaffara) as long as she is unable to fast.
