As for "Qurban" (offering), it is every act of obedience by which one draws closer to Allah the Almighty. However, due to its frequent usage in reference to slaughtering, it has become known by it.
"Offering a Qurban" is something you do before your need, in gratitude to Allah for it. If it is a vow conditioned upon the fulfillment of the need, then it falls under the rulings of vows. If it is merely an act of worship, then there is no harm in it, such as giving charity and asking Allah to fulfill your need (which is a permissible means of seeking closeness), or asking Allah the Almighty to fulfill your need, and once it is fulfilled, you perform an act of worship such as slaughtering or fasting, and so on.
