Reports related to seditions among Muslims must be verified because many of them are fabricated and weak, especially what is narrated about Yazid ibn Mu'awiya and his stance on the قتل (killing) of Al-Husayn, may Allah be pleased with him. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned that Yazid did not order the killing of Al-Husayn, nor did he rejoice at his killing. Rather, he cursed Ibn Ziyad for it and honored Al-Husayn's family. The Sunnis have adopted the position of neither reviling Yazid nor loving him. He is like other evil and oppressive rulers, to be treated with justice: neither praised nor condemned, neither loved nor cursed.
